| Kotch Northern Pomor's Vessel |
Kotch is a wooden one-masted, flat-bottomed, one-decked sea vessel of the Northern pomors. Usually the ship had a length to 24 m and a width to 8 m. She could take up to 30 people and more than 30 t of cargo. She was moved with the help of a sail sown from deerskins and oars. She had a hinged rudder. The distinguishing features of all these ships were their hull firmness and fine seafaring qualities allowing to stand the most fierce storms of the Arctic Ocean when the Russian discoverers of the 16th - 17th centuries made their brave 'Mangazeya' voyages, conquering vast territories of Siberia.
